Lymphedema

There is no cure for lymphedema but treatments at Fremont Therapy Group can reduce swelling and maintain the reduction, helping the patient improve their quality of life.

Our Lymphedema Certified Therapist completed an intensive eight-day course at The Academy of Lymphatic Studies in Chattanooga Tennessee followed by a comprehensive examination to achieve a national certification.

What is lymphedema?

Lymphedema occurs when lymph vessels are unable to transport lymph fluid. The accumulation of protein is what causes pitting and eventually changes in the tissue (fibrosis). Over time the skin hardens and gets worse if left untreated.

Lymphedema typically develops in one arm or leg, but may affect both. It can also occur in the hands or feet, chest, back, neck, face, abdomen or genitals.

Cancer patients are at risk for developing lymphedema. Especially those who have had mastectomies, lumpectomies, radiation treatment, lymph node removal, surgeries, infections or trauma to the limbs.

How do we treat it?

Our CLT uses Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) to treat patients. It’s a non-invasive treatment and is proven to have long-term results in both primary and secondary lymphedema. First, they move the lymph fluid out of the affected region and reduce the swelling using Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) techniques and bandaging.

Next, once the swelling reduces, the patient uses compression garments to help prevent more swelling.

And finally, the patient must keep the skin clean and stick to an exercise program. Now, patients can visit our clinics in Fremont County instead of traveling to larger areas for treatment.
