Fremont Therapy Group is pleased to announce that Aileen Brew, PT, DPT, GCS has earned the designation of Clinical Specialist in Geriatric Physical Therapy (GCS) from the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS) of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA).
She is one of only 3 physical therapists in Wyoming with this certification. To obtain board certification, professional candidates must submit evidence of required clinical practice in one of nine specialty areas: cardiovascular and pulmonary, clinical electrophysiology, geriatrics, neurology, oncology, orthopedics, pediatrics, sports, and women’s health physical therapy. Candidates complete a rigorous year-long course of study and examination, demonstrating specialized knowledge and advanced clinical proficiency in a specialty area of physical therapy practice.
“Becoming a board-certified clinical specialist in geriatric physical therapy has made me understand how critical it is to identify and address the various functional challenges my patients face alongside their main medical diagnosis. I have a unique opportunity to help through education, exercise, and encouragement – to keep my older friends in Fremont County moving!” Aileen explains, “Our older patients often come to see us for issues not directly related to aging. For example, they come following an injury or surgery, or with back pain. But as PTs, we have the ability and appropriate skill set to see and address other issues, like balance problems, weakness, or poor posture. If we address these issues, we can help an older individual stay mobile, safe, independent, and be healthier.”
The GCS certification is valuable because geriatric care encompasses a wide range of medical issues affecting the movement system, including stroke, Parkinson’s, dementia, osteoporosis, heart/respiratory failure, and joint replacement among others. At Fremont Therapy Group, we believe age should not be a limiting factor for movement and fitness. With a GCS therapist on our team, we are all able to serve our community residents by helping them have the best quality of life throughout their entire lifespan.
President and Founder of Fremont Therapy Group, Brent Kaufman expands, “Aileen’s hard work to earn this rigorous Board Certification speaks volumes of the quality therapy staff at FTG. Earning a Board Certification is an extraordinary commitment to the physical therapy profession and gives our therapists the advanced skills to treat patients with the absolute highest quality of care. At Fremont Therapy Group we support the advanced education of our therapists because we want the best for our community members.”
